What is integrative psychiatry?

Integrative psychiatry is a holistic approach to mental health that combines conventional psychiatric treatment such as medication and psychotherapy with evidence-based complementary therapies, including nutrition, lifestyle changes, mind-body practices, and functional medicine. It seeks to identify and address the root causes of mental health concerns while supporting the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, for long-term healing and resilience.

Conventional psychiatry traditionally only focuses on diagnosis identification and symptom management via psychiatric medications and/or talk therapy. While these treatments can be very helpful, even life changing for some, many times they are just not enough on their own.

Just like plants that need the right environment to grow and thrive, our minds and bodies need the same. Our lives can be filled with various toxic inputs damaging us including nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation and stress, genetic vulnerabilities, food intolerances, poor sleep and lifestyle factors, trauma, unhealthy thought patterns, lack of connectedness— all of which can affect our mental health. But once we identify those underlying issues, we can address them and nourish our internal “soil”, allowing us to grow and thrive as intended.

Assessment includes a thorough psychiatric diagnostic evaluation plus exploration of various labs, genetics, hormones, diet, gut health, psychosocial context and lifestyle factors. Treatment can include therapy and medications plus nutrition, targeted supplementation, movement, stress reduction and mind-body practices.

The goal is to foster healing, build resilience, and support long-term well-being by supporting the whole person.
